Chalk Pastel and Acrylic on Canvas
57 x 67 cm
2025
Bar Reddin’s practice explores the quiet emotional charge of the everyday, transforming fleeting urban encounters and intimate moments into tactile sites of resonance. Working with the matte intensity of chalk pencil over a dark acrylic underpainting, Reddin employs a rigorous process of topographic mark-making to map the psychological terrain of his subject. In this work, the figure appears suspended between connection and solitude, framed by the vibrant grit of contemporary life. Reddin’s technique involves completely overlaying a dark ground with chalk, treating the surface as a site of both construction and erosion. Through repetition and abrasion, he reveals what lingers beneath the familiar: tenderness, disappointment, and a distinct millennial sensibility. The interlocking colour fields and vibrating contours do not merely depict a likeness; they chart the fragile dignity of an ordinary life. Through this deliberate layering of dry medium over a hidden depth, Reddin seeks to elevate the overlooked into a lasting, textural impression, inviting the viewer to recognize the vulnerability embedded in the mundane.
