Graphite and Coloured Pencil
90 x 146 cm
2025
"At first glance, a dormant bulb may appear lifeless, yet there is an incredible future hiding within that crinkled, papery jacket. Drawn much larger than life, this work invites viewers to reconsider the quiet, unseen lives of both plants and people. I discovered this remarkable bulb and its cluster of bulbils while bringing my amaryllis out of its yearly forced dormancy. This “mother” bulb reminded me of myself as a new mother, my career on pause as I cared for my two young sons. Because of this, I chose to focus on the bulb rather than the bloom, as is traditionally depicted. Built through slow, meticulous layers of graphite and strengthened with touches of coloured pencil, the work reflects patience, persistence, and the generative nature of motherhood."
