Wax and oil based pencil
56 x 71 cm

My drawing of Erykah Badu portrays her not simply as a musician, but as an embodiment of sound, identity and authenticity. This drawing is the first in what has become a series, exploring the weight that music carries — from how it becomes tied to an emotion or memory, to shaping the collective experience on a wider scale. Although this series is deeply personal, by translating a musical figure into a still image, this pauses that movement and asks us what remains when the sound fades. These works exist in that quiet space, where rhythm, history and self-expression are held still, allowing the viewer to reflect on their own relationship with music. The drawing is completed with coloured pencils, built up layer by layer to achieve the final rendered look. In some places, there could be over 10 layers, to capture the subtle nuance of portrait drawing.
