Coloured pencil on paper
20.6 x 20.6 cm
2024
My work is a portrait of my partner, Habi. We met in 2023 while teaching in South Korea. In our early days together, we’d exchange what we’d call ‘puzzle pieces’ about our lives. One of Habi’s puzzle pieces was a sweet and hilarious story of how a young Korean student had pointed to their tattooed arm one time and asked “Teacher, why scissors three?”. I’d wondered this myself when I first saw the striking tattoo, yet I never got a clear answer. Neither, presumably, did Habi’s student. We probably never will. I guess that’s what draws me so strongly to Habi. They’re a mosaic of puzzle pieces, some of which I’m lucky to possess and some which remain elusive. As such, my portrait of Habi need never be complete. As long as it can capture their scissors three.
