Roberta Fulford - Potential Future / Future Potential

Pencil, pastel, Conte pencil, charcoal, acrylic, watercolour, copper leaf on brown paper
180 x 170 cm
2025

This windswept Northumberland tree moved me because it is so shaped by its surrounding environment. I studied and sketched it; we became friends. A work of two halves, two sides of a mirror, this piece is born from my feelings and fears for its future and all our futures. On one side a multi-layering of all the materials I love represents an act of devotion, simply trying to portray its beauty, thriving on into a future we could sustain with collaboration and effort. In its opposing image the stark palette of monotone charcoal and acrylic on crumpled, explosive copper leaf represents an alternate, terrible outcome. I draw on unframed, large pieces of paper to be free and have movement like the natural world that so inspires my work. Each piece is imperfect and individually changed each day by its surroundings. Aren’t we all?
