Conte and ink on paper
170 x 100 cm
2023
I make work that is by and large a response to all that goes with living in a politically unstable, post pandemic, climate crisis world. Drawings are the starting point. My output ranges between a single drawing made in front of the motif to large collages that are a collection of drawings. My work is about redemption and love, the deep and complex relationship between individual/society/land/nature, a relationship taken for granted, abused and unbalanced. Breughel’s Triumph of Death is an image of hopelessness, fascinating in its complexity, with no let-up in the downpour of grief and destruction and finality, death mocking life and our pretensions. The embracing couple in the foreground are simultaneously part of the scene and separate from it in terms of time, material and look - love amongst desolation, their imagined horror our nightmare. They are a counterpoint, a different image of humanity: tender, vulnerable, exhausted and afraid.
