Stephanie Fawbert - A Teapot on Borrowed Time

£2,000.00

Inktense watercolour pencils
49 × 90 cm
2025

This drawing depicts the kitchen of a clifftop seaside cottage that will soon be demolished.
It is a time capsule of 1950s and 60s decor, and seaside memorabilia. Some of the crockery belonged in the kitchens of other cottages in the terrace that have now gone.. one demolished in 2001, another in 2014.

In this drawing, I am documenting a place that I have known all my life intimately. The kitchen represents the people who have passed through, the teas drunk together, and the food shared. The day-to-day implements and vessels we use in our interactions with each other become symbols of the people who have used them and the memories across my life.
Drawing the kitchen felt like a forensic mapping of a place, a grappling with imminent loss, and the human desire to hold on to things forever.
