"I'm especially interested in linear ways of representing space, usually through urban and architectural subject-matter. In the last few years I’ve become preoccupied with capturing the experience of a look that travels a long way up and down a space, through compositions encompassing a large angle of vision. Sometimes I explore this through strict linear perspective, assuming a single vertical picture-plane; sometimes I change the picture-plane at what I call particular ‘seams’ in the composition.
I usually start my large drawings in situ at the centre of the composition. Once they get too big to handle or stand back from, I work away from the space (usually on my bedroom wall), taping on extra pieces of paper. I’ll then keep revisiting the space, if possible, for more focused studies.
I also enjoy incorporating imaginative or fantastical elements into a rigorously constructed space. Put another way, my work seeks to collapse supposed hierarchical distinctions between observational drawing and illustration."
